Yes.  It works fine with two caveats.

1. You need a special crossover arrangement; Eagle electronics 
(in Glendale) (at least) has plugs for this or you can make up a
custom cable. If you choose to make a custom cable MAKE SURE IT'S MARKED
because someone will get burned later if not.  (I've been there several
times :-)  (also, if you have coax ethernets in a video house (also been
there) make sure you get the green-colored terminators rather than plain
metal ones.  The possibilities for screwups there are endless :-)

If you're in Orange County, Marvac/Dow or Orvac *may* have these plug adapters
too.  (actually you can use video cable and terminators on *short* ethernet
runs.  Don't mix either cable or terms, though...)

2. If you take one of the machines down you'll get a console message
on the other of 'unexpected interrupt'.  That can (at least for DEC 21040
boards) safely be ignored.  Hubs inhibit this message.
