I had fumbled through:
# make
# make install

Anyway, re-did it your way :)

Now I get:
# vinum stop
Can't unload vinum: Device busy
#

I have various stuff (Apache sites, Courier Maildirs, etc. etc.) running
on those disks - I presume I will need to stop those other services first?
Perhaps a bounce would be the most painless ???
