Why do you wanna downgrade?  Unless you're going to run NIS, or
otherwise share encrypted passwords with DES-encrypting systems, i
wouldn't do it.

The downgrade however should work flawlessly if you're running -stable
or -current, since the crypt(3) there is ``dual-personality'', i.e. it
understands both forms of encrypted strings.  The are distinguishable
since the MD5 strings start with '$1$'.
