Hit the same issue on my ThinkPad X120e.  Installing drm-stable-kmod fixed it.

I'd like to see the issue with the base kmods fixed.

I maintain sysutils/desktop-installer, and this prevents users from getting a
working desktop.

If fixing the regression is not feasible, an automated way to detect when one
of the kmod ports is needed would be a fallback option.  I'm already
autodetecting Intel GPUs and setting kld_list in those cases.
