If you enable linux emulation in your /etc/rc.conf file
(linux_enable="YES"), and install the linux lib port
(/usr/ports/emulators/linux_lib) you will be able to run just about any
Linux program around unless it requires specialiezed libraries. You can
use X based apps as well as command line stuff.

I stay current with cvsup (/usr/ports/net/cvsup). It will fetch the newest
ports and changes to the old ones. The following is the configuration file
I use to synchronyze my ports:

*default tag=.
*default host=cvsup.FreeBSD.org
*default prefix=/usr
*default base=/usr/ports
*default release=cvs delete use-rel-suffix compress
ports-all
