Some more data (including freebsd-chat@freebsd.org):

The binary distribution client performs 45819 keys/sec on a 486/66

A GCC-2.6.3 binary performs 25k/sec on a 486/66 with standard math libs
A GCC-2.6.3 binary performs 49k/sec on a 486/66 with HAVE_FPU math libs
A GCC-2.7.2 binary performs 40k/sec on a 486/66 with HAVE_FPU math libs

The binary distribution client performs 346534 keys/sec on my PPro/233

A GCC-2.6.3 binary performs 390k/sec on a PPro/233 with HAVE_FPU math libs
A GCC-2.7.2 binary performs 219k/sec on a PPro/233 with HAVE_FPU math libs

Whats going on with the compiler? Anyone?
