During my many previous attempts, I had blown /usr/obj away and started a=
fresh.
This time, I tried the 'make cleandir' as well, and then followed the
"Upgrading 4.0 (and later) to 4.x-STABLE" instructions in /usr/src/UPDATI=
NG.

Worked like a charm (yay!), thanks!

ardbeg:src$ uname -a
FreeBSD ardbeg 4.2-STABLE FreeBSD 4.2-STABLE #0: Wed Jan 24 20:31:22 PST =
2001 root@ardbeg:/usr/local/obj/usr/src/sys/ARDBEG i386
ardbeg:src$

Gord. [who notes that 'make cleandir' isn't mentioned anywhere in
/usr/src/UPDATING :-( ]
