FreeBSD 2.2.7 doesn't support 3C509B cards (3C509 only). You need a version >= 2.2.8. If your HD is EIDE, then you've got another reason to use 2.2.8 or 3.x: 2.2.7 doesn't support EIDE drives larger than 8 GB.
