If you're correctly following the instructions I wrote in the
message you quoted, then you would never run configure directly.
The ports system does it all for you.

Do you have a php-session port installed? Does
/usr/local/etc/php/extensions.ini contain the line:

    extension=session.so

What do you get if you run this command?

    % php -r 'phpinfo();' | grep -i session
