I'm building up a FreeBSD 4.3 based server and am encountering a
reproducible lockup.
The freeBSD source is from 07/20/2001 RELENG_4 cvsup and runs fine on
other systems
however locks up hard under heavy i/o on thi machine. The platform is a
HP Netserver LH3r
box with dual Pentium II's 450 MHz and onboard HP NetRAID adapter BIOS
vers B.02.03
Nov 2, 2000. There are 3 9.10GB drives B 80-1205 and 1 9.10GB A 80-F309
drives in the
system configured for RAID5. FreeBSD installed just fine onto the
system from the 4.3 REL
CD, was able to buildworld, buildkernel, installkernel installworld just
fine using 07/20/2001
4.3 source, mergemaster OK kernel SMP enabled, using softupdates on the
4 filesystems.
When I attempt to untar a 720MB ports tree tarball from /var/tmp onto
/usr/ports the extract
gets midway thru then the tar xvf filename listing scrolling on the
screen freezes and the
system locks hard. The point where it freezes during the extract
varies, it's not the same spot
in the tarball and I tried tarballs I had of older and newer ports trees
as well so it's not the
tarfile. When the system locks there is no way to recover except hard
reset via hardware
reset button or power switch. the console is frozen and all keyboard
input including
CTRL-ALT-DEL is ignored. I fear the problem may be some incompatibility
between the
onboard Netraid controller and the amr driver. Here is the dmesg output
from the machine,
any troubleshooting procedures anyone can recommend would be most
appreciated. =20
