I think the issue is not with the question (I believe) you intended to ask: Which is preferable, KDE or GNOME, and why? However "better" requires a judgment call and those people who prefer one to the other don't want to hear the other called "better." Hence do flamewars start. I prefer KDE. I tried GNOME and couldn't get it to work properly and gave up after about a month of trying. I think that if I could have gotten it to work I might have liked it. I don't know; it didn't work and so I don't like it. I even admit that it was probably my own fault. Other people like GNOME.
