I'm having a spot of trouble setting up a diskless FreeBSD box.
I've got the bootp, tftp, and everything set up, to the point where the
diskless box boots FreeBSD without a hitch. The system comes up,
everything works OK, and I'm able to login to the diskless box and do
useful UNIX stuff.
The problem comes with the networking. When I'm on the diskless box, I
am able to telnet, ftp, irc, basically do anything to access other hosts
on the network. BUT, if I do EITHER ONE of the following:
(a) from another machine, try telnet in to the diskless FreeBSD box (or
ftp, or finger, or anything really)
(b) from the diskless box itself, do any of the above;
then things act weird. The machine basically crashes. No illuminating
kernel panic message (yes I have DDB compiled into the kernel), no syslog
messages, nothing. Just a reboot.
This is, obviously, somewhat unacceptable behavior. Any clues as to how
to proceed in fixing it?
FYI, the machine (diskless one) is an AMD 486DX4/100 with 8 MB of RAM.
Generic S3 VLB video board, Floppy/IDE controller (with 345MB IDE drive),
SoundBlaster Pro, MaxTech NE2000 card, serial/parallel IO card (16550
UART's).
Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!
