"Better" can be fairly subjective.  Normally, in your case I would be
suggesting Linux, because you'd be best able to get support from the
other people you know, however ...

... FreeBSD's network code is _far_ superior to Linux's, and more 
importantly, is well documented in a pile of excellent books on TCP/IP
networking.

If you're serious about an operating system that works when it comes to
networking, there's no comparison. (yet; I'm quite sure the Linux camp
are working to close the gap 8)
