GENERIC ships with the ppp pseudodevice compiled in, I think.  Can you get
any log output from ppp?  (It'll be in /var/log/messages, most likely)

FreeBSD doesn't have the same idea of 'free' as Linux does, since the
system happily ursurps all available memory (after programs) for the disk
cache.  You can check 'top' for the memory status though.
