My FreeBSD home directory was mounted as an apple volume via the chooser. my assumption was that the Appletalk/Netatalk combo would be slower than standard ftp via Fetch. When I tried these same tests with the hub connected I gave up interest in timing it because it was transferring so slow compared to the switch. It was evident that the switch was just blowing it away. Hope this helps.
