I had a similar problem getting NIS started. Remove the asterisk and zeros from the "+" tag record in the passwd file. Make sure you do this with vipw so that the db file for the passwords is rebuilt as well. I know that those field values are included in Stern's book, "Managing NFS and NIS", (O'Reilly), but take them out and see what happens. I need to do some testing on this, but my LAN is running smoothly and must wait a few more days. I am also trying to write a bit on this, so if you all (yes I live in Texas) want to share your experiences, off list, feel free to do so. Good Luck!
