I think I am close. You were right on with the CVSUP /usr/posrt/Mk. I CVSUP'd ports-base and make install runs in /usr/ports/mail/sendmail without any complaints. I now received the message you spoke of: as the message tells: [...] --------------------------------------------------- To activate sendmail as your default mailer, call the target 'mailer.conf': /usr/ports/mail/sendmail$ make mailer.conf And this worked fine.. My last point of confusion: I do not know what to do about rc.conf, defaults/rc.conf, /usr/local/etc/rc.d, etc. As it stands now I have changed flags in /etc/rc.conf as the message tells: [...] in FreeBSD-RELEASE < 4.6 set your flags in /etc/rc.conf: sendmail_flags="-L sm-msp-queue -Ac -q1m" When I reboot my system, only the msp portion starts. Do I need to use the shell scripts in /usr/local/etc/rc.d? and what do I do with them to start automatic?? Do I need to disable sendmail in rc.conf as Mathew Seaman indicated in his response?
