At one point, there was substantial disagreement amongst the Emacs developers about how to add support for new windowing systems besides X11, and this ended up forking the project; for a while, XEmacs had much better native font-handling and color management on non-X11 platforms like Windows, NEXTSTEP/MacOS X, etc. Most of those changes have been reverse-merged into the main Emacs tree since, so the differences are no longer as significant. > Which to choose for plain console using?
