Need a stronger contrast between the highlighted word and the
rest of the words I think.  Maybe use a lighter weight typeface
for non-selected ones?  Maybe make the yellow "glow" brighter as
you go toward the dark end of the bar?  The "News" is easy to
read, but the "Index" is hard.

(keeping in mind that my display does not have gamma
correction...) 

One question: could this be translated into, say, German and
still fit on one line?
