I apologize for the typo: I meant to say that it wasn't true on
FreeBSD releases later *than* 3.x.  The device *should* be snd0 
on 4.0 and later.

Unfortunately, that still doesn't help the original poster, but I
don't think we have enough information to definitively answer his
question.
