I'm not going to object to it then but I do have some reservations. I think it's wrong for the ports tree to add features like that because they make FreeBSD behave differently than other systems. There may also be scripts that rely on the current behaviour. This is something that you should discuss upstream, but I don't think upstream will accept it for the simple reason that xml2-config predates pkgconfig and the only reason it's still part of the package is backwards compatibility. New code is supposed to use pkgconfig.
