Thanks to Bill Vermillion <bill@wjv.com> who replied:

/usr/ports/net/nslint was Very useful, in picking out my errors, so I could
develop a working config :-) I commend it to anyone else having named problems.
I'm posting commiters@  suggesting a commented reference to it be placed in 
	src/etc/namedb/named.conf
