Are you talking about the resolution?  (The X Y size of your screen?). 
You can use ctrl-alt-<numpad +> and ctrl-alt-<numpad -> to change the
size of the viewport (the part of the screen you actually see on your
monitor) on the fly.  You can also edit /etc/X11/XF86Config (if you're
running XFree 4.x) or /etc/XF86Config (if you're running XFree 3.x) 
Look near the bottom of the file for the lines to change.
