Did you go into kernel configuration mode at bootup and disable everything you don't have/need? Someone posted a message a while ago about his CD-ROM causing it to lock up. Try disabling the IDE controller that the CD-ROM's attached to (if it's different from your hard drive), and see if it still hangs.
