I'm not sure how much this applies to something as old as HD 4850, but with
modern Radeon cards, the EFI framebuffer conflict is solved by
hw.syscons.disable=3D1 (which, well, disables the EFI framebuffer, so you h=
ave
garbage on screen after the bootloader and before the GPU driver loads :D)
