I suggest reading http://www.freebsd.org/handbook/install.html before
proceeding any further.

For the laptop, they're basically comparable to desktops except laptops
have this unnerving quality of using cheap, not-quite-compatible hardware
which may or may not work all the time or even work with FreeBSD (or even
work with the provided OS :-) ).
