I suspect most CD burners are designed to disallow overwriting of data already written to a CD-R. Otherwise the software method would already exist and you'd see lots of people treating CD-Rs as rewritable discs. Which they aren't. Personally I'd physically destroy the disc using whatever method you prefer, eg. removing the label with steel wool, or disintegrate the disc with a shredder.
