FreeBSD is a BSD Unix operating system; but it isn't Open Group certified UNIX(tm) primarily because people don't feel it's worth paying for such certification. None of the freely available BSDs (ie, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, NetBSD, and so forth) are certified UNIX.
