I agree with the previous opinion to use something based on nvidia. Support for it is very mature & stable at this point. VAAPI isn't nearly as well supported. Mini-itx systems are just fine too. I have a mix of mini-itx (ion and ion2) htpcs as well as a few matx and atx. Of them all I prefer mini-itx the most because of the really small footprint, very low power consumption, no noise/fans/moving parts, etc. Who doesn't like a totally silent htpc that's the size of a nintendo wii?
