Well, it sort of happened ;).  3.0 did elf executables but still had an
a.out kernel.  3.2 has an elf kernel as well.  I did this from the upgrade
option on the 3.2 cdroms and had no problems.  If you're doing it from
source code you'll need to install new boot blocks to boot the elf kernel.
This is explained (maybe in /usr/src/UPDATING?).
