I'm not surprised. :-) The union filesystem code is broken and has
been broken for a long time.  It is written in ancient legend that one
day the great Hsu will arise again, bearing 4.4 Lite2 integration
patches and paving the way for unionfs's eventually return!  On when
this day might come, however, the legend grows murky and vague! :-)
