You should already be a member of group operator so that you can
suspend your machine :-).

However, wouldn't it be much simpler and easier to make apm world
readable instead?  Hmmm, and hack apm.c to open readonly.  Hmmm, there
are other problems with that since you can do the nasty things...  But
those should be fixed.
