Not wanting to muddy any water, but my 2.2.2 system runs fine off a WD Caviar
2.1Gb UltraDMA drive...

UltraDMA drives fall back to regular ATA-4 (PIO 4 or whatever) if they don't
have specific drivers / controllers etc.
