I have changed the subject to better reflect the object under discussion.

I have just done a swap out of FreeBSD to Devuan. It's worse than I thought.

I use this box for a personal owncloud and the last time I was taking measurements of the network, it was actually syncing to my desktop; thus eating bandwidth.

So, I stopped it. These are the new readings:

[A plain write to /dev/null from a file made by /dev/zero]

dd if=/tmp/test.img of=/dev/null
1024000+0 records in
1024000+0 records out
524288000 bytes (524 MB, 500 MiB) copied, 22.8584 s, 22.9 MB/s

Now the network speeds (the destination machine is the same):

22.9 Megabytes per second, filezilla to Windows 10, SSD & NVMe.

16.5 Megabytes per second, SAMBA.

Compared to FreeBSD:

7.4 Megabytes per second FTP

7.1 Megabytes per second SAMBA

It's like it's capped at 100 MB/s rather than 1000 MB/s (real 300 MB/s).

Thanks

Matt.
