As far as I know text attachments are still accepted. So, if the attachment is being stripped either you are sending gziped/uuencoded attachments or your MUA is not describing it as text. The latter used to happen to me when I was using sylpheed (I've seen the light and switched to Mutt now :-) YMMV.
