I'm using an HP ScanJet 4C regularly.  However, i'm using it on a
decent SCSI controller (AHA2940).  The aic(4) driver is known to be
rather weak (nobody maintains this driver by now), so i wouldn't be
surprised if _that_ were the root of your evil.
