Do you have a primary slave device installed? The reason I ask is because I had a similar problem a while ago when I had a primary and secondary master, but no primary slave. Have you tried entering wd2a at the 'Boot:' prompt? I can't remember the exact syntax, but you can specify where the root fs is at the boot prompt. Once you get it to boot using this method, I think you can then modify some file to tell it where to look (or recompile the kernel). Sorry I don't have exact details. I'm sure someone else on the list does know!
