Note that the default is "-O2 -fno-strict-aliasing -pipe", and you shouldn't override that unless you have a good reason to do that. Specifically, using any optimization beyond -O1 (including -Os) without -fno-strict-aliasing is not supported; it's known to break some ports at least.
