Remember, you With 2 IDE disks on the primary controller, the CD-ROM drive as master on the secondary controller is not recognised at all even with the CD-ROM in. (wdc0 not found at 170). If I move one of the disks to the secondary controller both it and the CD-ROM drive are recognised although the CD-ROM drive generates a "not ready" error. The installation sequence then hangs (or at least waits for a *long* time) when the initial screen ought to appear. In this case there is a "hole" at the primary slave. > can't have any "holes" in the master/slave, master/slave configuration > of 2 IDE controllers. I had not realized this is a restriction. In fact the machine came configured with two master devices and no slaves at all, and worked OK with the pre-installed last year's OS from a large software company. If FreeBSD can't tolerate "holes" i'll try to change the configuration. Is it still necessary for the CD-ROM drive to be a primary device? Are all (or at least more ) ATAPI CD-ROM drives now supported? Apologies in advance if this is all in the FM for 2.1.5 but I can't R it as I haven't been able to ftp it all yet. Stuart
