This has the ability under DOS or NT to extract the bootblock for Linux, so that the NT bootloader can be configured to boot Linux without the hassle of having to use DD/whatever under Linux to extract the salient data. I emailed him about using BOOTPART with FreeBSD, but he's not au fait with the O/S. He's a nice guy (I've registered his other software for 95/NT - Winimage) and I guess that he'd be amenable to fixing BOOTPART if someone could provide the relevant info. - I'm a bit out of my depth here. Alternatively, is there a FreeBSD utility somewhere which under DOS/9x/NT etc. which could do the same job? It's not a major deal to use the Fixit CD to extract the bootblock, but it is an extra hassle, something which for newbies (me included), can be a little difficult to wrestle with. Anything which makes installation of FreeBSD in multi-boot situations easier has to be a plus/selling point, IMHO. Clem PS: Sorry about the noise at the foot of this email - there's nothing that I can do about it. Please ignore it and accept my apologies. -----Original Message----- From: RickSiple Sent: 20 April 1999 22:22 To: marko; RickSiple Cc: RickSiple; freebsd-questions Subject: RE: Boot FreeBSD 3.x from NT boot loader I was looking for information of which file generated by compiling the code under /usr/src/sys/boot/i386 represented the boot blocks. The instructions I found on the web page said to use one of the files generated from compiling the source in /usr/src/sys/i386/boot/biosboot. Specifically using the file called boot.nohdr, the 2.2.x boot blocks. Your method, however, would work just as well. Although I was hoping for something using the cp command instead of the dd command, for novice users. cp seems to have less potential for damage than dd. Thanks again. I'll use your method and continue investigating. __________ Rick Siple ricksiple@mpainc.com -----Original Message----- From: Mark Ovens [mailto:marko@uk.radan.com] Sent: Tuesday, April 20, 1999 4:37 PM To: Rick Siple Cc: Questions (E-mail) Subject: Re: Boot FreeBSD 3.x from NT boot loader On Tue, Apr 20, 1999 at 04:05:12PM -0400, Rick Siple wrote: > 2) Updated instructions for using the NT boot loader. > The aforementioned instructions basically said to used the > boot.nohdr file generated by compiling the boot manager itself. I found I had to recreate C:\BOOTSECT.BSD after u/g 2.2.8->3.1.
