Or rather, host cam.ac.uk now returns There is an entry for this host, but it doesn't have an Internet address. However, host -t mx cam.ac.uk now returns the correct mx records. (Earlier, ie before March 10, the -t mx was never necessary.) Moreover, the mail queue is now clearing, so it seems qmail is getting the mx records properly. I don't know whether this is normal behaviour now... but at least the machine is working. I'd still like to hear any clarifications. Thanks Rahul.
