Marius, thank you, I figured it out already.
Here's the winning xorg.conf: http://seis.bris.ac.uk/~mexas/freebsd/xorg.conf
in case somebody else might be using this hardware.

Also, could you comment on Warren's suggestion of Radeon 7000?
Do you think it might work on blade 1500?
