Just last night I had to bootstrap a 2.1-stable make world on my 2.2 system with a "make -I /altroot/usr/share/mk" to make it work right and that was only after I manually populated the mk files in my destination tree. This then fell over for other reasons, so I created a chroot environment and built there.
