try

 set ctsrts on

Check the man pages for ppp. You see there several commands and options whi=
ch might will help you. I really cannot tell why my modem works. It was jus=
t a strange trial and error sequence until it started to work.

ppp does not detect that there is a carrier. The command above might fixes =
this.
