It depends. If the port is a dependency of another port, you either need to create master and slave ports (e.g. mozilla and mozilla-gtk2) or create two distinct ports (e.g. gnet and gnet-glib2). Some maintainers might not like this, but you can certainly try. Note, we will not be yanking out GNOME 1 and GTK+-1 libraries. Ports such as ethereal, vim, anjuta, etc. will still work. We will just be removing the desktop components.
