I'm assuming vmstat agrees with netstat -m e.g.
vmstat -z | head -n 1; vmstat -z | grep mbuf

It could be that the disconnect is the cause of mbuf issue and not the other
way round. You'd have to catch it when the issue is occurring to confirm.

If you have plenty of ram you could just trying doubling kern.ipc.nmbjumbo9=
 to
see if the problem goes away?
