Have you tried to revert from vt(4) to the old sc(4) console system. (Not sure if vt(4) is used when booting distribution media.) If it is and you are installing from distribution media you need to drop into the loader and "set kern.vty=sc ". I REALLY suspect that vt(4) is the source of the issue as, if it is used, will match your symptoms to a "T" if it is failing to talk to the graphics system.
