Software - generally anything written for Unix is usually compatible one way or another, although this is most certainly not true 100% of the time. Anything written for Windows will not work, and that is also true of Linux, however under both Linux and FreeBSD there is various projects underway for emulating or running Windows from within the OS. See VMWare and Wine for details. As for hardware, see the Hardware Compatibility List for the latest release, this is usually the best resource for info. For the current 4.3-Release, see section 2 of the notes on http://www.freebsd.org/releases/4.3R/notes.html for information on supported hardware. Hope this helps, and best of luck with FreeBSD.
