After reading that thread, I added a line to device.hints to keep ACPI completely disabled:
hint.acpi.0.disabled="1"
and kept these lines in loader.conf:
snd_mss_load="YES"
snd_pcm_load="YES"

By golly, IBM Crystal Audio[tm] is working now!
And it's even way better than OSS!   ;)
...at least with the little bit I've tested so far...
(crossing fingers & whatever else come in pairs)

The system feels 'heavier' now -- I bet it is due to irqs not being so fast (edge/level triggers) as with ACPI enabled?
