agree...
got the same experience like this on my Dell Precision 410 (dual P3-550 under 4.0-RELEASE)...
system crashed without any reason under SMP kernel (UP kernel seems more stable - but still crashed)... turn out to be a loose heat sink clip (cheap heat sink sucks!)...
I changed the heat sink, works great without any problem now! =)

Please check your hardware setup first, especially processor cooling device (fan, heat sink, etc)...
